CALL
FOR PAPERS
The
fourth international
HYDRA
DONKEY AND MULE CONFERENCE,
Island
of Hydra, Greece - 10-12 October 2014.
Papers
and audio-visual presentations are invited on all matters pertaining to the
history and culture of donkey and mule usage worldwide, in all regions and in
all periods of history.
.
Our
earlier conferences in Hydra focused on “Donkeys and Mules of the
Mediterranean”. For this year’s conference we are extending our brief
internationally.
The
island of Hydra is a very special place. Located just south of Athens, the
island has no private cars, buses, lorries etc. Land transportation is done by
mules and donkeys.

This
year’s conference returns to Hydra. Our conference [10-12 October] will
coincide with the visit of the veterinarians of the Greek Animal Welfare Fund,
who come every year to treat the island's mules and donkeys. This provides a
unique opportunity for in-depth studies of good practice in local
cultures.
You are invited to offer a paper or audio-visual presentation at the
conference.
If you wish to present a paper, or wish to attend the conference
as a member of the public, please write to the conference organiser
ed.emery@soas.ac.uk
Further
details will be sent by return. Abstracts should be 200 words maximum, and
please send an accompanying CV of 100 words maximum. The deadline for
submissions is MONDAY 7 JULY, but we welcome submissions in advance of that
date. Notifications of acceptance will be sent at the end of July.
The
conference is open to members of the general public. There will be a small fee
for registration for members of the general, including a concessionary rate. .
Registration
for speakers and presenters, and for residents of the Island of Hydra, is free.
We regret that the conference is not able to contribute to expenses for travel
and accommodation. However we can offer advice on travel and accommodation
options.
All
presentations will be published on-line, on our Conference website; selected
presentations from all four conferences will also be published in book form.
We look forward to seeing you in Hydra.
With best
regards,
William Clarence-Smith [SOAS], Conference
chair
Ed Emery [SOAS], Conference organiser
